The Power of the King (bed)

Self-Care Life Discoveries 4 min read
I’m sick at home and terribly bored! I realized how long it has been since I took the time to take flatlays and styled shots and since most of the work can be done in bed I snapped a few shots climbed back and under the covers and got to work! I must say white balance is the trickiest part of these white shots! Well, that and blow out! I really try to avoid that! I like my photos to be clean - not blow out!

After muling for days or maybe weeks, I decided to take myself to the bed shop in Denpasar. The reason: I've been sleeping on a crummy bed that came with the house I'm renting. It must have been at least 20 years old, since the house was 15 years old when I started living there and I'd been there for 6 years now. Every time I moved on it, I could hear the iron springs squeaking. I read an article recently about the importance of a mattress, and it should be replaced if not evaluated every 5 years of so.

Imagine my surprise coming to this shop, which was recommended by a friend, seeing all sorts of beds, and especially the prices. Holy cow, there are bed sets that costs over 5o million with mattresses that were upwards of 36 million, and those prices were already discounted... I was in another dimension... I knew nothing about beds, just heard of some brands, but never bought a mattress for myself in my whole life. Come to think of it, even before I moved to my current home, I was sleeping on a very old mattress that was about 20 cm thick. And now I'm seeing mattresses that are 40 cm thick!

I got myself educated about mattresses in an hour by a very helpful sales lady called Ibu Aini. She was patient, helpful, and giving me plenty of space and time to be indecisive, doubtful and confused before I finally made my decision, which was not made without trepidation and fear that I'm committing myself to a large amount for an unplanned purchase. I thought IDR 5 million would give me a decent enough mattress, now I learned differently. I have to thank my friends Mau and Tutde who convinced me to get the most reputable brand, King Koil, and the highest grade I could afford.

Now I've slept on this bed for two nights in a row; a monstrosity of 75 cm height. The result: I feel like a King, sleeping high above ground, on a bed that's so solid yet soft - I'm not sure if soft is the word, because it's not mushy, although it seems to cradle and yield to my body perfectly. I didn't get what all the hype about latex bed was. Now I can tell you: a latex bed is abbed that doesn't feel like it has springs in it.

I'm still somewhat stunned that a bed could feel so comforting and comfortable. I guess, that has to do with the latex lining, and the latex-wrapped springs, the fabric used for the mattress. The energy of the bed feels different, which is strange considering it is an inanimate object. Trying on different beds I could feel the difference between beds that are energy-less, flat, dead, and beds that are vibrant, alive and welcoming.

When I move, the mattress below me doesn't move. The saleslady demonstrated it to me at the shop, by hopping on the bed while I was lying on it. I swear, there was no movement of the bed, I remain supine, not jolted, not dipping. I'm wondering now if the back pain I'm having was the result of years of sleeping in soft, springy bed... Since I've been sleeping on this bed, I no longer feel the downward pressure towards my lower back that had caused me constant discomfort.

To think I had no idea about all this, that it's worth spending a lot of money on a very good bed, rather than spending a lot of money for a new iPhone. This bed is so much more important to my health, to my wellbeing, and I'm in a relationship with the bed for a much longer future. They give a 10 year guarantee for the bed, and now I understand why. I'm so glad that I took the plunge and spend wisely on my self-care.

I'm now a convert and a believer. If you consider yourself worthy, let a worthy bed carry your weight for one-third of your life. You're worthy and you're precious too. Invest in a good bed, enjoy your bed, have sweet dreams, make good love, and sleep like a King on a King Koil bed. FYI, I'm not paid by anyone to advertise the brand, or the shop, or the saleslady, but if you'd like a good service, good price and good bed, the shop I went to was Toko Karya Subur, Jl. Gatot Subroto - Denpasar, and get a bed that empowers you.

Btw, if you decide to get a mattress that's higher than 30 cm thick, you would need to get a custom-made fitted sheet that's 40 cm deep (my bed is 36 cm thick).

If you ever decided to get a new bed as a result of what I just shared, please share your experience with me.
